Great Lakes Kite Festival: Grand Haven
Over on Michigan’s magnificent west coast during May is the First Annual Great Lakes Kite Festival in Grand Haven, Michigan. Beautifully colored kites of all sizes, some as large as school buses, will take to the skies! The festival will showcase world famous stunt kite fliers who will be performing choreographed musical routines using both two line and four-line sport kites in the center flying field. Try out your own kite flying skills over at the north end of the event or perhaps go browse the incredible selection of kites as well as other wind toys and spinners. The festival is free to attend if you are a resident of Michigan and have a recreational pass on your license plate though there may be parking fees. Out of state festival attendees and those without the pass will need to pay to attend.
Lyon Township Kite Festival: Lyon Township
Over in southeastern Michigan there’s the Annual Lyon Township Kite Festival during June at James Atchison Park. There will be lots of family fun including food tasting competitions, concerts, exotic pet show and lots of professional fliers showing off their amazing kites and aerial skills. Admission is free but there is a there is $5.00 parking cost to support the park.

Detroit Kite Festival: Detroit
On beautiful Belle Isle, located in Detroit, Michigan, is the Detroit Kite Festival in July. Guest can either bring their own kites, or they can borrow or purchase some to fly. This local festival features professional kite fliers and kite related activities as well as on-site kite making by the Detroit Institute of Arts. The DIA will have a kite making tent which encourages both the young and young at heart to dabble and have fun with creating their own flying toys. This year the festival has paired up with the Michigan Philharmonic which will be providing a musical score for the day’s kite flying. The Windjammers Kite Team will be performing a musical kite flying show as well. This event is completely free to attend, and no tickets are necessary!
